One needs a work tool to use these skills. They can be bought at 'the shop'. You get a free one when you ask to learn the skill.
Products acquired through the use of these skills can be used as an ingredient for Advanced Work Skill.
NOTE: You can learn all 6 basic work skills on every character. They are not limited like the advanced skills.
How to use a basic work skill
Once you've learned a work skill in whichever village you happen to start in, you are ready to work.
You must have the proper tool in order to use the skill. You may only use the tool in the appropriate areas. For example, the fishing pole can only be used near a body of water.
Let's continue with the fishing pole as an example. Once you've learned how to "fish", go to the nearest body of water. If you are in Gion, there is a river near the village to the southeast. In Greenville, will find a lake is to the south of the village. The Dwarves do not have fishing as an option, they have mining which we will talk about in a moment.
At the bottom of your screen in the left hand corner, there is a toolbar with nine different icons. The second icon from the left (the blue one) is your work skills icon. Once you click on it to open a window showing the different work skills you have learned. You may also use the short cut ctrl+x. Click on the fishing work skill. This will open a second window showing the type of fish you can catch (As well as the tool needed). Click on Level 1 Fish, and you're character will keep working untill you stop her, or your tool breaks. It's that simple.
Now for the Dwarven folk out there, one of the first skills a dwarf learns is mining. This skill works the same way the other skills work. In order to use your work skill, you have to enter the square corridor surrounding Illium. Once there, select the second, blue icon on the bottom left (ctrl+x) to open the work skills window. Select Mining, and then select Coal. In order to use this skill you must sing "Heigh Hooooo" rather loudly as you watch your character mine untill the tool breaks, or the inventory is full. You might find that it will work even if you dont sing, however.
