No, what Fisher meant was that using two of the same species would reduce the number of possibilities from four to two. There is still a 50/50 chance of getting one skeleton or the other.

The best way to increase your odds of getting a light STR pure, is to try and merge your skeleton with either a Light Cloud or a Gem Crawler. Both of these have fire-types that are over level 60, which are impossible to obtain via merging. This would narrow your possibilities down to three pets, two of which being the element you want.

with nutrient merges, you can always get out the parent. So chance of getting str/str dark pet is never 100%

No, that doesn't apply if you used a lvl 60 pet to merge with in the first place. It's still 50/50 that you could either get the dark gemmy or the fire ruby. It's just a better chance of getting what you want compared to using 2 pets from a different species where it's only 1/4 chance.
